Went to a real live auction
Over the weekend......purchased a few Liberty $20 gold pieces..ranging from 1893 - 1904. The ones I won were graded MS60 - MS61....by ngc and pcgs (some by both). My average cost out the door was $725 per coin...bought a few. What I found really interesting is that the raw (not graded) $20 liberty and Gaudens went for $750 or more per coin. There was nothing special about the dates on any of them...no special mint marks...all common dates.
I seriously doubt any of the raw coins will grade any higher than mine....and who knows if they had been cleaned improperly...or whatever. I am assuming people are just speculating that they will get an MS63 or something... I thought I got a decent deal...not great but ok. I would have paid less for the raw coins...not more! |
Re: Went to a real live auction
Not to mention the fact that it costs big bucks to have a gold coin graded by NGC and someone has already paid to have yours slabbed! With gold over $730 today, it sounds like you got a good deal on those double eagles!

Re: Went to a real live auction
Smooth move by you. Even the US Mint stopped selling their gold $750. :bull-buddy-icon:
Slabbed is great. I've had a couple of those "speculations" turn ugly when sent back in NGC/PCGS "body bags" with a note ALTERED coins. They EVEN looked MS64 to me - I was sure tricked - and frankly, it was a kick in the head! :bear_w00t::banghead: I never buy raw NUMISMATIC coins: only NGC/PCGS certified. Period. :applause_:applause_ Once burned, twice a FOOL, and three times a NUT! :confused_ma: :no_ma::no_ma::no_ma: |
Re: Went to a real live auction
gopher: The price looks good in hindsight! If gold would have dropped $20 instead of going up $20....would be a different story! .9675 ounces per coin....for the record. It seems the Gaudens are flying off the shelf...and the Liberty Double Eagles are lagging...as usual!

Historystudent:
The worst I have ever got back was a note saying the coins were "improperly cleaned". Just curious...what does "altered" mean? Assume maybe they were real coins that were somehow improperly filled or repaired...just curious... |
